5 life changing business books that have become relevant during COVID-19

During COVID-19, we’ve all had a lot more time on our hands. This has meant that we’ve had time to read new books and delve back into the ones that we’ve already read and loved.

A good business book has the power to change our outlook and inspire change, and as business leaders, it’s important to always be reading. In fact, research has shown that most CEOs read on average a book a week. So, if you want to make the most of the downtime that has come as a result of COVID-19, reading is a great way to boost your knowledge and keep your mind sharp.

Some books become more relevant during a crisis, and these are the books I want to highlight and share today. Here’s a quick list of the 5 life changing business books that have become relevant during COVID-19.

7 habits of highly successful people – Steven Covey

This is a fantastic book for anyone wanting to brush up on their habits and emulate the behaviors of highly successful people. It’s about creating your own destiny and creating the future that you want.

The book goes into being proactive vs reactive and taking control of the things that we can control. This is super relevant during a pandemic in which the problems and challenges that we face are largely out of our control. The best thing about this book is that it neatly packages the habits you need into 7 habits or steps which allows you to take action. Follow Steven Covey on LinkedIn and Twitter.

The Innovator’s Dilemma – Clayton Christensen

The book explains how successful companies can fail when they don’t look forward and innovate. However, it also goes into the ways that this can be a challenge.

Improving performance is important – reducing defects and making things more powerful helps us stay in line with current demand (ultimately this is what sells the product and pays the bills). However, disruptive innovation is how we really change things and how businesses become iconic. Sustaining innovation satisfies current needs, however, disruptive innovation changes what we expect and provides for the customer’s future needs.

Finding the balance between both and choosing the right time to tackle each form of innovation is the innovator’s dilemma. Learn more about the book over on the Harvard Professor’s website. Follow Clayton on LinkedIn and Twitter.

Traction, get a grip on your business – Gino Wickman

COVID-19 has been a crazy time and has meant that most of us have lost a grip on our business. This book is ideal for leaders who want to launch into the direction of how to implement and drive culture.

This book is a blueprint on how to run your business with the culture at the forefront, and how to get everyone on board with the vision. Once this crystal clear vision is in place, it makes it a lot easier for leaders to hand over the reins and start to accelerate growth with the help of other people. Who – Geoff Smart & Randy Street

This book offers a guide to how to hire the right people in the right roles, so that they make the best decisions for your business. It goes through the process with a fine toothed comb and provides a 4-step approach to hiring the best people for your organization.

The key message of this book is that it is the “who” not the what behind the person that will dictate whether they are a good fit. Follow Geoff Smart on LinkedIn and Twitter.

Growth IQ: Get Smarter About the Choices that Will Make or Break Your Business – Tiffani Bova

This book focuses on the best ways to grow. Everyone seems to be looking for the one thing to fix their business, but it turns out that it’s not one thing. There are multiple things that we can do to accelerate growth.
Understanding your market, combining the right things (people, product, culture, market) together and doing it in the right sequence is the key to this book. Focusing in on the choices that shape our businesses is ever more important since the COVID-19 outbreak, as many businesses have hit a revenue stall where they have time to reassess. This book is an ideal read for any business leader at that point, and will provide some answers to the question of how to grow from here on in. Follow Tiffani Bova on LinkedIn and Twitter.
